Loyal readers may remember the pickpocketing that occurred at the 1901 grocers’ picnic. It seems that this annual picnic was the spark for all sorts of hijinks.

We have attempted to locate the location of Ward’s Saloon and since it appears that the Georgetown district of Seattle was in these days its own separate town the proto-addressing system of Seattle itself did not apply to Georgetown. The closest we were able to get was through a telltale mention of Ward’s Saloon being where the “street car line turns past the corner of Ward’s Saloon” in an unrelated story. Researching the maps of the street car lines of the day, we believe that this is where Ward’s once stood — A Sound Transit Park and Ride Lot at Spokane and Airport Way.
EDIT: We have looked into this further and now believe Ward’s Saloon in 1902 was where the Julius Horton Building was built in 1914. Again this is going by the two turns at corners the street car line made when nearing and in Georgetown. The Julius Horton building of course now houses 9lb Hammer and Smarty Pants among other trendy establishments. You can read more about older (and newer) real estate deals in Georgetown concerning Julius Horton and others here. Sadly, there just isn’t enough to go on, in order to pinpoint exactly where Ward’s once stood. But that is our best guess yet.
